Hand Applique - Birds, Buds, & Blooms

Hand applique technique class using the freezer paper starch method to turn fabric over a
template. Participants will create freezer paper templates from a photocopy for all pieces. This
technique class builds on skills such as making templates (circles, stems, leaves) and
introduces new shapes and layering applique pieces. We will focus on curved shapes and
building simple birds, buds, and blooms and then hand stitch these applique pieces to a
foundation background.

This is a beginning to intermediate skill class and students are welcome to bring assorted
scraps or consider purchasing a layer cake with coordinated fabrics. A pattern will be available
during class which includes simple birds, buds and blooms.

We’ll have fun and you will NOT need a sewing machine for this class.


Supply List:

 Freezer paper 3-5 sheets (8.5” x 11”)
 Best press starch in a jar and ¼” paint brush and glue stick
 Portable bright light, small task iron (no wands please), ironing surface (medium
omnigrid)
 Curved and straight scissors, small paper scissors, tooth picks 3-5
 Light box (optional) but an important tool for applique
 Awl or stiletto, applique pins, Roxanne’s Glue Baste it, clear scotch tape

 Assorted medium cotton fabric scraps 6”x6” or layer cake for blooms/buds/birds
 1 yard Light background fabric, 100% quilting fabric, or Essex (we’ll choose size during
class depending on your project)
 Threads (silk or 80 wt cotton) to match applique fabrics
ALL ITEMS must be brought to class unless you plan to purchase at Cherry Berry
during class.
