Thread Painting (CALIMESA)

Discover skills and techniques to create a fun pet portrait collage. I will teach you how to draw shapes
to create a template from a photograph, understand the importance of value in selecting fabric choices, and
learn successful color complements. You can use these elements to create a portrait that has interesting
design and color combinations that pop! We will lay down fabrics on our substrate, then use free-motion
embroidery with a domestic sewing machine to adhere the fabric and create texture to bring your portrait
to life.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Good working knowledge of your sewing machine
Requirements: Photo: I provide the reference photo to teach from which you will also use for your free motion embroidery project. I’ll email it to you right before the class starts. Fabrics: White cotton fabric - 1 yd. Assorted colors, values, and prints of cotton fabrics for the body of the animal. I mostly use brightly saturated prints from the Kaffe Fassett collection and other scraps laying around. Fabric for background - 1 yd. Choose a fabric to compliment the subject. Neutrals work when in doubt. (You can purchase the background fabric when you have the subject close to completion.) Lightweight tear-away stabilizer - ½ yd. You’ll need a wall outlet adapter for the USB cord too if your board light requires it. It is helpful to have a working knowledge of your sewing machine.
