Creating Perfect Circles (BAKERSFIELD)

This hand applique technique class is for beginners to intermediate skill level. No sewing machine needed! Class sample is a fun circle pillow or circles for a bag or small table. We won’t be making a finished pillow, but you will learn how to add circles to any applique project.  This is NOT a needle turn applique class, but the edge will be turned.

We will meet twice to review how to make a freezer paper template and the use of starch to turn the circle edge.  We will practice making circles, temporary glue baste and practice  hand sewing.

Hand sewing applique is fun and relaxing.  Once you learn how to make a template for applique and the appropriate hand applique stitch which will hide your stitches.  Most beginners have very good looking circles by the end of the first day.

Supplies:

o   Reynold’s Freezer paper (15” or so in length) or (3) 8”x10” sheets of freezer paper

o   Charm pack or scraps (assorted 3” squares at least 30 coordinating quilting fabrics)

o   John James Straw needles size #11, or Tulip applique needles size #11 or 10

o   Paper scissors and curved scissors (Kia scissors are amazing)

o   Small Roxanne glue baste it – no glue sticks

o   Coordinating thread to match charm pack - I recommend 100 wt silk YLI  or 80 wt cotton thread

o   Background cotton fabric – recommend ¾ yard solid. I used cotton Kona – CUT fabric into (30) 4.5” squares ready for class

o   Small task lamp – portable, you’re going to need this as fine thread is hard to see.

o   Small hand held iron, (not a wand) and IRONING surface/firm pad – not wool.  I use an Omnigrid folding mat.

o   Pencil, tooth pick, scissors to snip threads

o   Rotary cutter/mat, small 4.5” ruler (optional) if you do not cut fabric before class

This class is the first in a series of freezer paper/starch applique technique classes as we progress in our applique skills. Other topics will include, leaves and stems, flowers, birds, clammy shapes, reverse applique, and eventually machine applique on turned edge.
